Gliding into Assam - Delhi-Rajdhani Express

Sunset over river Brahmaputra, Guwahati, Assam

The sun sets early here, I was told, before I boarded the train to 'beautiful Assam'. It did. I looked hard for signs of Shariagathi bridge over the tame looking vast spread of water -- the Brahmaputra. Light bulbs reflected off the water to let me know of its presence there. And that is my first meeting with Brahmaputra. Meeting? not really. Not yet.

Even later in my stay when I crossed the magnificent river it seemed nothing like a meeting, quite unlike the response that River Ganga evokes from me. Ganga, the magnificent -- caring mother, bubbly teenager, mature wisdom and more to me...

What was it in the Brahmaputra that evoked this unlikely response, I wondered. The spread of the river was downright threatening. Reputation you would say! It is the reputation that the fiery river has for brimming over its banks and challenging life in this part of the world.

It was the reputaion I figured, that kept me from falling in love with the otherwise perfectly placid waters of the mighty Brahmaputra.

The quietness did nothing to announce its power when in rage. Well, then? Biases go a long way in creating barriers for communication with something as basic as nature -- the most tangible form of God. Watchout, I said to myself, forcing the irrelevant reputation out of my head, to truly appreciate the bounty that lies in all that Brahmaputra is at the moment -- now and here.
